Urban Development Czech Republic

Project: Competition for mixed-use urban development
Location: Ostrava, Czech Republic
Brief: 120 hectare industrial site to be redeveloped with new public spaces, cultural centre, retail, offices, residential, transport system and recreation areas
Submitted: October 2000

The urban concept presented provided a series of urban spaces, linked by a boulevard, which sweeps from the old city centre to the main city railway station. At the centre of this boulevard is a central square on which are located two existing listed industrial buildings which will house a cultural centre and city museum. Retail outlets are introduced to ground level along the length of the boulevard and to most public spaces, and above are 4-5 levels of office space. The river bank area is to be cleaned-up and developed as a recreational zone with parkland and riverside walks.
