Red October Masterplan, Moscow

In april 2006 Mcadam Architects were commissioned to design a high profile Masterplan for the historic 19th century Red October chocolate factory site south of the Kremlin. Under the instruction of the clients GUTA Development and city authorities they were also asked to orchestrate the selection of international architects to design various buildings for the project. This very prominent site was located on the peninsula where the Moscow river meets the Vodootvodny Canal and gives Moscow the opportunity to realize a long awaited architectural landmark as well as a produce a showcase for modern living. The outline brief for the project was to provide 500 high-spec residential units totaling around 100,000sqm on the five hectare site, including 150 loft style apartments and 350 new flats with shops, cafes, galleries and private sports facilities around a central boulevard. A number of listed 19th Century buildings on the site are to be completely retained and incorporated into the development. This is a positive move for Moscow’s heritage and urban culture, as in recent years sites have been indiscriminately cleared to make way for new development.
